- In 1982, Evelyn Hannon was newly divorced, all alone and scared to death. She bought a backpack, a couple of maps and a $200 plane ticket to Belgium. </di All along when I was traveling, I made notes on women-centered information, because there was little in the way of this, says Hannon. Hannon started Journeywoman as a newsletter to provide common-sense information to women travelers. In 1994, the newsletter grew into a magazine. By 1997, she brought it to the Web. My daughters said to me, Mom, youre digitally deficient; how are going to make this work? Not only did it work, but this week Hannon welcomed viewer number 500,000 to the Web site. Hannon produces the site, but its written by volunteer contributors from all over the world who provide advice, personal stories and contact information. A related site, www.HERmail.net, allows users to exchange advice directly among themselves. Hannon appeared Tuesday on Good Morning America </ and then joined a live chat on ABCNEWS.com.
